Claude cannot reach a Telenet mailbox on its own. mcpemails is a hosted MCP server that connects it over IMAP at imap.telenet.be on port 993, authenticating with your full telenet.be address and the password set on that mailbox in MyTelenet, so Claude, Cursor or any MCP client can read, search, send and organize the mail. Telenet issues no app-specific password and has no client-access toggle: every mailbox is created, and given its password, on the Je mailbox screen in MyTelenet. One inbox is free, forever.
How Telenet connects: IMAP against a proxy, with a per-mailbox password
Telenet serves IMAP at imap.telenet.be on port 993 over implicit TLS. For outgoing mail Telenet's own setup pages document smtp.telenet.be on port 587 with TLS and authenticated SMTP; the same host also answers on port 465 with implicit TLS, which is what mcpemails prefills. Telenet is explicit about the username form: Gebruikersnaam: je volledige e-mailadres. The password is the one attached to the individual mailbox rather than a separate app credential, and mailboxes are created and administered in MyTelenet: a beheerder on the account can create up to ten mailboxes, a plain gebruiker one. What answers on those hostnames is a proxy (* OK IMAP4rev1 proxy server ready) sitting in front of the mail store, which explains the thin capability set described below.

Verified 2026-08-31: imap.telenet.be answered a TLS connection and identified itself as an IMAP server under that name. It advertises PLAIN authentication.

Open Je mailbox in MyTelenet and set the password
Sign in at mijn.telenet.be and go to Je mailbox, the mailbox management screen. Each mailbox on the account has its own password, assigned when it was created; an unassigned mailbox has to have one set by the account administrator before anything can log in. If nobody remembers it, set a new one there.
Consider giving the agent its own mailbox
An account administrator can create up to ten Telenet mailboxes, a regular user one. If you would rather not hand an agent the address you have used for fifteen years, create a second mailbox on the same account and connect that one instead. It is the same host, the same ports and a password you can rotate without disrupting anything else.

What actually goes wrong with Telenet
Changing your Telenet password silently breaks every connected client
Telenet says it in as many words in its own setup guide: if you change the password of your Telenet username or e-mail address, verander dan ook het wachtwoord in je e-mailprogramma. There is no app password insulating the client from the account, so a routine password rotation in MyTelenet takes the agent offline with it. The failure surfaces as an authentication error hours later, long after anyone connects it to what they did in the portal. If you rotate the Telenet password, update mcpemails in the same sitting.
You are talking to a proxy, and it advertises no MOVE and no SPECIAL-USE
The banner is * OK IMAP4rev1 proxy server ready, not a mail store identifying itself. It offers SASL-IR, IDLE and UIDPLUS, but not MOVE, so filing a message runs as a copy, a flag update and an expunge rather than one atomic command, and not SPECIAL-USE, so Sent, Drafts and Trash are matched by name rather than by role. A Dutch-language Telenet mailbox usually names them Verzonden, Concepten and Prullenbak, so name the folder explicitly if an agent cannot find it.
The mailbox belongs to the subscription, and Belgian rules give you 18 months
A Telenet e-mail address is tied to a Telenet mailbox on a Telenet subscription. Under Belgian rules described by the telecom regulator BIPT, when you leave a provider you are entitled to keep using the address, or to have mail forwarded, for eighteen months, and you have to ask for it before the subscription ends. Beyond that window a royal decree in force since 1 January 2024 caps what an operator may charge for continuing the facility at 1.50 euro per month. Worth knowing before you build an agent workflow on an address you only hold while you are a customer.
Sending is capped at 20 MB, which is low for the category
smtp.telenet.be announces a maximum message size of 20,971,520 bytes. That is the encoded size of the whole message, and base64 inflates an attachment by roughly a third, so a file over about 15 MB on disk will not go. An agent asked to forward a large PDF gets a hard SMTP rejection rather than a slow send.
Known limits with Telenet
- Because the server has no MOVE support, a move is not atomic. If a connection drops mid-operation a message can briefly exist in both folders.
- The 20 MB submission cap is the practical ceiling on anything your agent sends from this mailbox.
- Telenet issues no app-specific password, so the credential you give mcpemails is the mailbox password itself. Rotate it in MyTelenet and update it here at the same time.
Telenet and AI: common questions
Does Claude work with Telenet email?
Not on its own. Claude has no built-in Telenet connector. Pointing an MCP server such as mcpemails at the mailbox over IMAP gives Claude read, search, send, reply, schedule and organize access to it, and the same connection then works from Cursor, ChatGPT and other MCP clients.
What are the Telenet IMAP and SMTP settings?
IMAP is imap.telenet.be on port 993 with SSL. For outgoing mail Telenet documents smtp.telenet.be on port 587 with TLS and authenticated SMTP; the same host also answers on 465 with implicit TLS, which is what mcpemails uses. The username is your complete telenet.be address.
Does Telenet need an app password?
No. Telenet issues no application-specific passwords. A mail client authenticates with the password set on that individual mailbox in MyTelenet, under Je mailbox. Because there is no separate app credential, changing the account password means changing it in every connected client too.
Why did my Telenet mail client stop working after a password change?
Because the client is using the account password directly. Telenet's own guidance is to change the password in your e-mail program whenever you change it for your Telenet username or address. Update the stored password in mcpemails to the new value and the connection resumes immediately.
How many Telenet mailboxes can I create?
An account administrator can create up to ten mailboxes; a regular user on the account can create one. They are all managed on the Je mailbox screen in MyTelenet, which is also where each one gets its password. Creating a dedicated mailbox for an agent is usually neater than connecting your main address.
Is my Telenet mail stored on your servers?
No. Messages are fetched live from Telenet over IMAP for each request and handed to your AI client. Credentials are encrypted at rest and message bodies are not retained.
